How to Improve Vocal Recording even Without a Vocal Coach

Singing can be a challenge for some of us even though we really enjoy doing it. Us Filipinos love to sing even during our pang araw-araw na gawain and just for fun pag wala tayong magawa. If there’s a nation that’s truly vocally gifted, it’s definitely the Philippines.

But not every everyone is equally gifted with singing. May ibang na kailangang ng practice and extra training para ma reach ang tunay nilang potential sa pagkanta, and meron din mga tao na truly gifted sa pagkanta without needing any training or correction. Sila yun favorites ni God kung baga.

But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t any room for improvement and many of us may not have access to a vocal coach or just don’t have enough time for extensive vocal training. Pero gusto pa rin nating mag-improve ang boses natin especially when we’re also doing vocal recordings. So we’re excited to tell you that na may maraming iba’t-ibang paraan and diskarte para ma improve ang iyong vocal recording even without a vocal coach.

First things first, before doing any vocal recording, you’ll need to have a solid foundation sa iyong boses. Kahit gaano ka high tech ang kagamitan na iyong ginagamit sa pag record ng iyong boses, pangit pa rin ang kalalabasan ng iyong vocal records if you don’t have a solid foundation in terms of proper singing techniques. The good thing is that you can work on this foundation even without a vocal coach.

  • Keep Jaw Dropped Consistently

Sigurado ako na may ibang magugulat na napakahalaga ng jaw placements for proper singing technique. This may not be something that a lot of singers think about, pero for a better quality vocals, kailangang ang ating mga panga ay palaging open, na at least mag kakasya ang dalawang daliri o isang takip ng bote habang tayo ay kumkanta.

Ang point nito ay mag proproduce tayo ng better sound quality while we’re singing through our resonance, louder, and less vocal strain. Practice with reciting the vowels first (A, E, I, O, U) while keeping your jaw open. Pag sanay ka na, gamiting mo ang same technique sa pag kanta, you’ll notice a great improvement.

  • Find Your Singing Style

There’s no better way to say it. Hanapin mo ang isang way of singing na talagang masasabi mo na uniquely sayo ang ganitong style ng pagkanta. It’s okay if you don’t find it right away. Sometimes, you’ll have to copy and paste from different artists and experiment with different genres of music to find your own style.

Listen at the way your favorite artist sing and a different artist sing. Better yet, makinig ka sa mga cover singers and how they re-interpret the original version of the song.

  • Get Familiar with the Sound of Your Voice

And it’s only natural. There’s a difference between hearing your voice from inside your mind and hearing your voice from a different source. I highly recommend getting used to hearing your own voice, nagkakanta ka o nagsasalita lamang.

I recommend record yourself talking first. Kapag nasanay ka nang marinig ang sarili mo sa recording na nagsasalita without singing, then you can start recording yourself singing. This is the best way to get used to the sound of your voice at pwede mo na itong gamitin bilang instrument to objectively judge your singing.

Once you’re used to it, nakalampas ka na isang barrier na most singers face and you’re one step closer to an improved vocal recording.

  • Master One Song at a Time

Don’t rush yourself. Pumili ka ng paborito mong kanta sa paborito mong mangangawit and try to perfect that song through daily practice. Record it to!

Remember, your vocals are a muscle. If you can’t hit a certain note one day, through practice and dedication, kayang kaya mo na yan abutin the next. Also once’s you’ve mastered the song, sing it in your own style. Do some tweaks here and there with the song sheet, sing it with a different style, have fun with it. Pag super comfortable ka na sa pag kanta ng song na ito, only then do I recommend to try and master a new song.

  • Practice Your Notes Every Day

There’s literature out there that suggests that in order to master a skill, you’ll need to practice this skill for over 10,000 hours. Na sayo na kung gusto mo sundan o maniwala sa study na yan pero one thing that I agree with this notion is that kailangan natin mag practice, practice, practice araw-araw para pa improve ang ating pagkanta.

Like the previously mentioned dripping of the jaw when we sing, you need to practice it consistently until you develop muscle memory for it when you sing. Sa sobrang sanay mo na ito ginagawa, dimo mamamalayan na maayos na ito every time you’re singing.

  • Maintain Good Posture

Different postures while singing can make or break a vocal performance.

This way, we have easy access to the air from our belly and less effort para makahinga habang kumakanta. Nirerecommend din na straight ang ating leeg kapag kumakanta and our shoulders back without tensing, chest out, and our abdomens flat. Isa pang important thing to remember is to always stay relaxed.
